Masters Showcase

I chose a concentration in special education for my Master of Arts in Education Degree, so many of my classes focused on various aspects of instruction for students with special needs.

Below you will find samples of projects that I worked very hard on and am very proud of, book reflections about two books that I found very interesting and really spoke to me as a special education teacher, and research on autism that I also found interesting. All these examples show the skills and strategies I have learned throughout my Master of Arts in Education program and how I can and have applied them to my classroom.

Projects

  • This professional development program was created collaboratively with two other classmates. This professional development focuses on math instruction for students with disabilities in grades third through fifth. This professional development was created to provide the 3rd through 5th grade teachers with tools that will equip them to effectively teach mathematics to students who are at risk of failure. You can check out the professional development program can be check out here!

  • This informational power point focuses on emotional impairments. It talks about how the state defines an emotional impairment, defining characteristics, and some facts and statistics. So the next time you see a child throwing a fit, remember that there could be more going on there!

  • Have a difficult student that you just can’t figure out what is causing his or her behavior? An ABC Chart is a direct observation tool that can be used to collect information about the events that are occurring within a student's environment. "A" refers to the antecedent, or the event or activity that immediately precedes a problem behavior. The "B" refers to observed behavior, and "C" refers to the consequence, or the event that immediately follows a response.

  • This technology brief is an engaging, informative, and accurate document that can be used by other teachers to guide their use of a specific set of digital literacy tools. The brief focus’ on highlights of a rationale and research. In this presentation you will find 6 strategies along with a rationale that states why this idea or practice will help a struggling writer and research to support the strategies.

Book Reflections

  • Collaboration is working with others to do a task and to achieve shared goals. Collaborative learning a system in which two or more people cooperate in a learning experience to share and contribute to each member's understanding of a topic and to complete a given task. Throughout A Smile As Big As the Moon, there are many great examples of collaboration. If you are looking for a great read, check out A Smile As Big As the Moon!

There Is A Boy In Here is a great look into the world with a child on the autism along with a look at the world from the child’s perspective. This book really hit home with me because of two students on my caseload. It really opened my eyes to everyday life with a child on the autism spectrum. It was also a great read!

Research

  • Social stories are such a big part of my classroom. This article really opened my eye to how useful social stories are to those with autism. It also makes me feel that social stories would benefit those who may not be on the spectrum but have behaviors that need to be changed. This article discusses a study that looked at the effectiveness of a well written social story and how it helped reduce a certain behavior in the natural environment.

  • I feel it is important to incorporate a social skills lesson into my daily lesson plans. I believe that social skills lessons can help more than just those on the autism spectrum. This article discusses a study that looked at the effectiveness of an outpatient therapy based group focusing on social skills intervention with children who are high functioning on the autism spectrum.
